In November 2024, Joel and I traveled to Japan for the very first time. Chris joined us as our seasoned guide, having visited many times before—his expertise was invaluable!
From the moment we arrived, we fell in love with Japan. A stunning country with a rich culture and kindhearted people, it was an experience like no other.
Tokyo Adventures
Our first evening in Tokyo set the tone for an unforgettable trip. We dined at a cozy yakitori spot in Ginza, savoring skewered, flame-grilled bites of perfectly seasoned meat. After dinner, we wandered the vibrant streets of Ginza, marveling at the dazzling city lights and energetic nightlife. Tokyo was mesmerizing, leaving us in awe.
The next morning, we rose early to explore the Tsukiji Outer Market, a haven for seafood lovers. We indulged in tamagoyaki (a fluffy Japanese rolled omelet), fresh shrimp, and skewered tuna steak at Tonboya. For dessert, we couldn’t resist Japan’s famously sweet melons—Bianca’s favorite fruit—and strawberries from Solatsuki. Every bite was a revelation!
Later, we visited the Asakusa Temple, a serene and cultural highlight, before heading to Mantensushi Hibiya for an exquisite omakase lunch. The rest of our Tokyo days were filled with culinary adventures and sightseeing. From fluffy pancakes at Happy Pancake to Kaiten Sushi at Ginza Onodera, and wagyu tasting at T-Nakameguro, we savored every meal. We also visited iconic landmarks like Shibuya Sky, TeamLab Borderless, the Hachiko statue, and indulged in some shopping along the way.
Kyoto: A City of Beauty and Reflection
Arriving in Kyoto, we were deeply moved when assigned room #0411—the same numbers as Bianca’s birthday. It felt like a message from our sweet girl, reminding us that she’s always with us.
Our first night in Kyoto featured a dinner at Hiro Yasaka-Tei, where premium wagyu was grilled tableside as we overlooked a tranquil garden. Every dish was a masterpiece.
The next day, we embraced Kyoto’s natural and cultural wonders. Highlights included feeding the monkeys at Arashiyama Monkey Park, strolling through the Fushimi Inari Shrine’s iconic torii gates, and the ethereal Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. We also took a short trip to Nara to visit Nara Park, home to the famous bowing deer—adorable and unforgettable!
Later, we visited Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a peaceful retreat where I felt Bianca’s presence so strongly. My heartache for her remains, but I pray that every step we take is making her proud.
For dinner, we tried Curry & Tempura Koisus, a TikTok-famous spot known for its artistic presentation. While the limited menu and wait time were challenges, the meal was worth the effort.
A Return to Tokyo
After a few enriching days in Kyoto, we returned to Tokyo for the final leg of our trip. One standout meal was at Yakiniku Kappo Note, a wagyu tasting restaurant gaining popularity on TikTok.
Our last day in Tokyo was spent shopping and making a quick visit to Shinjuku, soaking in the city one last time.
Reflections on Japan
It’s easy to understand why so many travelers return to Japan repeatedly. The beauty, culture, and hospitality of the people left an indelible mark on us. Every moment felt safe, clean, and magical—a truly memorable journey.
For Bianca
My sweet girl, I hope you loved Japan as much as we did. I imagine you snapping endless Instagram-worthy photos, laughing, and savoring every bite of the meals we shared. What I wouldn’t give to hear your laugh again or see your radiant smile.
I love you more than words can say, my sweet child.
Always and forever,
Momma
